How to Spend Your Spring Break at Home the Right Way

By Maddie Howard on March 28, 2017

As Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’”

When spring rolls around, and midterms are done, colleges around the country grant their students one glorious week of freedom to let loose called spring break.

Many students spend their spring break on the sandy beaches of Miami or take in the rowdy club scene in Cabo. If you have the cash, spring break is the perfect time to take a vacation, get your mind off school work, and enjoy the sun!

But for many students, packing for spring break doesn’t involve their favorite bikini or a bottle of sunscreen. These pupils are trekking home destined to spend a week on Snapchat and Insta experiencing some major FOMO. Lucky for them, I have comprised a guide of productive activities to do when stuck at home.

1. See your old friends

Unfortunately, not all colleges take the same week off for spring break, but chances are your vacation will line up with a few friends you haven’t seen since the holidays or even high school graduation, giving you the perfect opportunity to catch up with old pals.

2. Apply for jobs and internships

No school work. No excuses. Spring break is the perfect time to get to those pesky tasks that you have been avoiding. Now is the ideal time to update your resume and apply for summer jobs and internships. Plus, having your parents there to pressure you about your future is great motivation!

3. Earn some cash

Although you probably won’t be able to score your summer lifeguarding position back for the week, there are plenty of quick ways to make some fast cash to line your pockets before the second half of the semester. Try picking up a babysitting gig or shoveling your neighbor’s driveway. Your friends may come back tanner, but you’ll come back richer!

4. Plan your housing for next year

Want to move off campus next year? Is a house or apartment going to fall in your lap? Hell no! Now is the time to start identifying potential roommates and possible rentals.

5. Map out classes and study abroad opportunities for next year

Registration for the fall will be here before your know it, and the paperwork to study abroad must be turned in WAY in advance.

6. Spend quality time with your family

Of course, the best reason to go home is to spend some time with your family (and your family pets). Believe it or not, they miss you! Make sure to show them some extra love this week because, after all, you probably wouldn’t be at college in the first place if it wasn’t for their love and attention!
